LOTTOLAND REDUCES GLOBAL CARBON EMISSIONS BY ALMOST A FIFTH IN 2023

By News, Press ReleasesNo Comments

The lotto betting operator is on a pathway to becoming net zero by 2040

Online lotto betting operator, Lottoland, has reported a 25 tonne drop in its carbon emissions for the year as part of its plans to reach net zero by 2040.

The operator, which was the first in its industry to achieve carbon neutral status and also first to sign The Climate Pledge in 2019, has been working with Tunley Engineering, a global climate reduction consultancy, in order to take the necessary steps in measuring, reporting, and offsetting its carbon footprint.

Nigel Birrell, Group CEO at Lottoland said: “We’re incredibly proud to have made further reductions in our carbon use at Lottoland this last year, and to have been certified as carbon neutral for three years running.

“We’re committed to being socially and environmentally responsible not just for our customers but for our employees too, and it’s been fantastic to see so many of the Lottoland team taking consideration with their energy use and helping us work towards our environmental goals as an organisation. It’s been a real team effort, and huge thanks must go to Tunley as well for helping us find alternative ways of working.

“As a global business, we have historically been required to travel a lot in order to keep up relationships between our international teams, however with the progress made in recent years with virtual conferencing and remote working technologies, we’ve been able to make significant changes in this area as well as with our electricity usage in-office. With the help of Tunley and the dedication of our team, we hope to continue reducing this as we work towards our net zero carbon goals.”

Through its environmental work over the past four years, Lottoland has invested in many tree-related offsets, such as planting new trees or protecting existing forests. This is achieved through the Lottoland Foundation and offered to customers as an option when using the website.

This March, Tunley Engineering provided a Carbon Assessment that allowed Lottoland to fully comprehend and visualise its carbon footprint in annual tonnes of Carbon Equivalence.*

In its first year of carbon emissions reporting (2019), Lottoland identified emissions of 140.19 tonnes CO2e per annum.

However, over the past four years Lottoland has been committed to offsetting its carbon usage by various means and has reduced its emissions to 108.5 tCO2e for the year in 2023. This is reduced significantly from 133.12 tCO2e for 2022.

The progress made in recent years is part of a larger a road map implemented by the betting operator that will help it achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Changes include reducing business travel and carrying out more virtual meetings, adopting water saving devices, such as dual flush toilets that will reduce usage by 20%, and introducing energy saving technologies in-office, including LED lighting and smart meters for electricity use.

On the business-wide changes that are being rolled out, Nigel added: “By implementing the emission reduction initiatives that have been suggested for us to consider going forward, Lottoland will be able to reduce its emissions by 46% by 2030, which is something we’re all striving for as the next step in our goal to net zero. A huge well done to all of the team on the achievements made this year, we hope this is just the beginning.”

The Gibraltar-based company, founded in 2013, is on track to reach 18 million customers as it marks a decade of offering worldwide lotteries to people across the globe.

Nigel Birrell, Group CEO at Lottoland said: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating ten years of Lottoland this year. The past decade has been a whirlwind and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see the business go from strength to strength.

“We have a fantastic team of people at Lottoland that continually drive us forward and find new and exciting ways for customers to engage with lottery in a safe, enjoyable atmosphere. It’s a testament to them that we are expecting to welcome our eighteen millionth customer this year!”

Lottoland was first launched in 2013, and originally began with seven employees and just a handful of lotteries available to its customers.

Over the past ten years, the business has grown to include over 400 employees, 35+ lottos – including the US jackpots MegaMillions and Powerball, is active in 15 markets across the globe, rolls out over 50 new games per month, offers bets on over 500,000 sporting events, and most recently has launched KenoGo in Australia.

It’s through its international lotteries offering that Lottoland has awarded multi-million-pound prizes to its customers, including a world-record £79m pay-out on the EuroJackpot to Christina, a cleaner from Berlin. The prize marked the world’s largest online gaming win when it was awarded in 2018.

In 2020, Lottoland launched the first of its charitable products, the Win-Win Charity Lottos, which along with accompanying charity scratchcards has raised extra funding for organisations including the Blue Cross for Pets, DSPCA, Hospice UK, Irish Red Cross and the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association.

Last month Lottoland announced a significant milestone in its journey to net-zero after planting 2.7 million trees. The company was the first Gambling company to achieve carbon neutral status and sign The Climate Pledge.

Nigel added: “Looking back at the last ten years, it’s great to see everything we have achieved as a team, even when we have had some large obstacles thrown in our way! Looking forward, we’re all excited about the next chapter of our journey and continuing to grow and deliver exciting, innovative products for our customers.

LOTTOLAND REPORTS SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE IN ITS JOURNEY TO NET-ZERO AFTER PLANTING 2.7 MILLION TREES

By News, Press ReleasesNo Comments

Gibraltar-based online lotto betting operator, Lottoland, has reported a significant reduction in its carbon emissions for 2022 after being the first in its industry to achieve carbon neutral status.

The operator, which was also first to sign The Climate Pledge in 2019, has been working with Tunley Engineering, a global climate reduction consultancy, in order to take the necessary steps in measuring, reporting, and offsetting its carbon footprint.

Nigel Birrell, Group CEO at Lottoland said: “At Lottoland we are committed to being socially and environmentally responsible not just for our customers but for our employees too.

“Although historically a lot of businesses have been paying lip service to climate change initiatives, I think we’ve all realised that something has to change and we have a responsibility to make that change. If companies like Lottoland can make strides in carbon reduction, hopefully we’ll see more and more enterprises doing the same.”

Through its work with Tunley over the past three years, Lottoland has invested in many tree-related offsets, such as planting new trees or protecting existing forests.

Early this year, Tunley Engineering provided a Carbon Assessment that allowed Lottoland to fully comprehend and visualise their carbon footprint in annual tonnes of Carbon Equivalence.

In its first year of carbon emissions reporting (2019), Lottoland identified emissions of 140.19 tonnes CO2e per annum.

However, over the past three years Lottoland has been committed to offsetting its carbon usage by various means and has reduced its emissions to 133.12 tCO2e for the year in 2022.

Tunley Engineering also report that the business has evidenced purchase of carbon offsets totalling 278,982 tonnes of CO2e in 2022, including over 250,000 tonnes by planting nearly three million trees for the Eden Reforestation Project, and 22,000 tonnes for various myclimate carbon offset projects worldwide.*

Following this year’s report, Lottoland is currently implementing a road map that will help the business achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Changes include utilising communication technology over business travel, incentivising staff to use e-bikes and car share during their commute, and introducing occupancy sensors for its premises so that air conditioning is only being used during key times of the day.

Nigel added that the good news will not let Lottoland become complacent. They will continue to look into how the company could transition to carbon negative in the years to come:

“Now, with a greater understanding of the Carbon cost attached to energy use, business travel, and water use, we can make informed decisions in how to continue to make tangible reductions to our carbon footprint which by extension makes us a greener and more ethical company.

“We are proud to be taking a leadership position in climate change and we’re committed to a greener future, hopefully achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 or sooner!”
